Birkenstock use premium hides to produce thick and strong leather. Apply a water and stain protector suitable for both suede and metallic coated leather before wearing and after each cleaning. Avoid wax polish on suede/sheepskin as this will damage the special finish. For cleaning regularly use a suede/nubuck brush moving along the grain to remove dust and dirt. Sheepskin rarely needs washing as airing is usually sufficient as moisture vapour passes through removing any impurities, otherwise either wipe gently with a soft brush or a cloth dampened in cool water with a mild detergent, then rinse and allow to air-dry slowly away from direct heat. The cork footbeds come with a light coating of sealant to prevent them from drying out. When the cork no longer looks shiny apply a thin coat of cork sealant to prolong the life of your Birkenstocks.
Slip the Removable Insole from the shoe. To check whether your shoe is the correct length and width, stand on the footbed and inspect the fit. Toes should not hang over the edge and the arches should follow the contours of your feet, as described above. Reinsert the footbed into the shoe. The extra room is needed to perform the natural rolling motion of the foot without restrictions - just as if you were barefoot. There is more sizing information, including a conversion chart, here.
